Brother Arthur Frederick Hughes
Saturday the 25th of November and I’m back in the Wrekin (Shropshire) Province attending a good friend and Brother’s Exaltation within the Cyril’s Ladd and Carline Lodge.
There were four Brothers of each degree in Brother Trevor’s Guard of Honour, including Certified Primos who were raised earlier this week. A great honour for the new Primos.
The Ceremony was ably conducted by the Roll Of Honour Director of Ceremonies, Brother Mike Morris ROH who ensured the seamless completion of the entire ceremony.
Excellent decorum was given to the Grand Primo during the whole ceremony, albeit with a few smiles and laughter when the sponsors had their say. All good I might add, but humour was not absent.
After the first part of the ceremony was over, the Grand Primo retired with Brother Trevor ROH with qualified Brothers to impart the signs and passwords appertaining to the fourth degree.
When returned to the Lodge room, Brother Trevor ROH was awarded his emblem by the Grand Primo, assisted by Brother Pete Spence ROH, Grand Primo 2020-2021 and Brother Les Proctor ROH, Provincial Grand Secretary.
When Absent Brothers and the toasts were done, Brother Eric Jones Shrewsburycastle ROH, with the help of his daughter, presented the Grand Primo a cheque of £300 which was collected recently at various supermarkets by bucket rattling.
Brother Ray Mullinder ROH, the Worthy Primo of the Cyril's Ladd &Carline Lodge closed the special meeting, and excellent graze provided by the Lodge, prepared by Brother Ric Green KOM and his lady Buffess Sarah, was duly devoured with gusto. The raffle was held and some good prizes were won, unfortunately again, not by me.
Congratulations Brother Trevor Mason, ROH, Grand Chamberlain on your elevation into the Roll Of Honour.
Happy days

Pictures courtesy of Brother Arthur Frederick Hughes kOM. of Portraying the double raising held at the Down Inn on the Bridgnorth Ludlow road. Very well attended by over 40 brethren to include GP 20/21 and GP 22 and several GL officers. Following the dedication of the room, Brother Tom Jones ROH PGP performed the ceremony to our usually high standard. Brothers Dan Clarke CP and Ross Muchet CP held themselves with distinction and looked rather dapper in their 2nd degree attire. Following the raising there was a hot buffet of carved meats and crusty baps which went down rather well. Well done to the Arthur Oliver Lodge 10703 for organising a brilliant night for both the brothers concerned and the Province. Brother Damian Ward ROH IPPGP

When Howard Passes emailed me about the charitable work of his international fraternal organisation, I hadn’t realized that brotherhoods, such as these, extended so far across the globe, so far beyond the years of college. The Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (known as both the RAOB or the Buffs) is “a brotherhood or society of men from all social and economic backgrounds who hope to come together for the sole purpose of not only making themselves better men, but also trying to better those with whom they come in contact,” their website states.
In an email to the Cyprus Mail, the RAOB announced that, last Friday, they made it possible for 50 refugee children (and their teachers) from the Ukrainian School in Limassol to attend a waterpark for the day. To make the outing possible, the RAOB generously footed the bill.
Although they are not a charity, the RAOB is charitable — so much so that, within the Cypriot lodge of the RAOB, one committee works with the sole purpose of planning fundraisers. This committee, Holiday of a Lifetime, has been around for about 50 years. In this amount of time, Holiday of a Lifetime has planned many charitable events that bring underprivileged children to Cyprus for an experience that they could not afford on their own—an experience that the RAOB hopes they will never forget.
Founded in 1822, the RAOB began in London, though many lodges have, as Passes puts it, “mushroomed outwards” to countries where Britain has held colonies or other significant influence, such as Northern Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Middle East, India, Africa, Gibraltar, and, of course, Cyprus.
Like other RAOB members, Passes joined the fraternity, hoping to give back to others. Having recently retired to Cyprus, he, at the time, found himself craving more social outlets, especially because his body wasn’t allowing him to spend as much time scuba diving—his favorite pastime.
Now, Passes, along with his fellow Buffs, meet once a week to discuss business. “It’s good fun,” he emphasised. “We have a drink. We talk, and we plan agendas for upcoming fundraisers,” which have, in the past, included crazy events such as road racing, skydiving, and royal balls. “We will plan anything to get people to a function,” he laughed.
Passes said that the Buffs once funded trips for underprivileged children more frequently. Before Covid, Holiday of a Lifetime was even able to raise enough money to fly school groups from countries as far away as England or Ireland.
When I asked Passes about what moves him to keep giving back, his voice softened. “Seeing the children enjoy themselves can make even the hardest person melt,” he told me. “It’s worth every penny. That is what spurs us on—seeing how the kids react. That is what keeps us going, and we love it.”
“We are simply the vehicles of finance,” he simplified. “We raise money so that we can offer experiences exactly like this one. Why keep giving back? I think it’s nothing more than we enjoy it.”

Sad to see The Old Shawbirch Pub at Trench taken down. In my youth it was the home of The William Henshaw Lodge 5414; where my father was initiated in 1930. Wow! it's nearly 100 years ago.

Tonight, Friday the 12th of May, a bit of history was made in the Wrekin (Shropshire) Province.
Brother Dad, Inducted Brother Son, in the Sir Leonard I Aulton Lodge No 2897 at the Royal British Legion Club in Dawley, Telford.
The Immediate Past Provincial Grand Primo of the Wrekin (Shropshire) Province, Brother Damian Ward ROH, raised his son, Brother Daniel Ward to the second degree.
The ably conducted ceremony was witnessed by Grand Primos of their respective years, Grand Lodge Officers and Brothers from near and far. Excellent decorum was given for this important milestone in a young Brothers progression within our Order.
The Provincial Grand Primo, Brother Tom Jones ROH gave way for Brother Damian to carry out the Induction of his own son. The honour of raising your own flesh and blood in our Order isn’t so common these days. This is one to remember for all the right reasons.
The well attended ceremony was enjoyable, as many old friends were reacquainted and a few new ones also made. All this strengthens the bond between us all.
All hail the newest Certified Primo in the Wrekin (Shropshire) Province, Primo Daniel Ward. Congratulations on obtaining the key to your progress for your journey through the ranks of the Order.
After the ceremony there was a raffle, Lady Luck smiled on me tonight, had the first win of the night whilst enjoying very tasty graze, which was prepared by Brother Ric Green KOM and his good lady Sarah.
Really happy days See pictures above Written By Bro. Arthur Frederick Hughes

Last night( April 7th. 2023 ) I had the proud duty of installing the PGP for 2023 Bro Tom Jones ROH during the ceremonial investiture attended by brothers and guests from far and wide.
I was overjoyed to have four respected grand primo's as my guard of honour Bros Pete Spence, Terry Billingham, Hayden Bennet and Dave Moses. Who then assisted me through the ceremony.
I had the great pleasure of announcing the total raised for my appeal last year of £9,352 which raised an enormous round of applause followed with presentations of certificates and chocolate bouquets for my family for there help and support throughout my year as PGP.
With the robing of the knights chapter and ROH presidents Bros Trevor Mason and Alan Sykes respectively the ceremony so ably assisted by the PG Chamberlain bro John Bradley was concluded, and the graze was unleashed on the masses and a fine spread was put on as usual by the Noel Jones Lodge ladies.
Tombolas and raffles held on the night raised over £400 to the province appeal of the Lingen Davis Cancer unit.
On reflection a fantastic night that was well supported by friends old and new from all over and enjoyed by all.
And we even got a speech from Brother Dan.(my son ) Which moved several to tears of pride.
